To keep clothes free from chips and dust I saw either on this site or on you tube a turners smock with elbow length sleeves and a collar that covered the throat with Velcro. I am wondering where such a garment may be purchased. My wife retired her sewing machine year ago so that is not an option. I don't like being covered in chips. As long as I am in the shop working the chips are fine. The problem is when I am called in for lunch or some other reason I have to be chip and dust free. My wife is a clean-a-holic. A turners smock is an ideal solution. Remove it and shake off the chips.

I almost bought the one on sale at Rockler, but it received bad reviews. I think I may just get a home depot one.

I once thought about doing something like that, then I didn't. Remove your shirt, brush yourself off, or just tell the wife to serve you lunch in the shop.

AAW, CSUSA and Lee Valley all have them.

I bought mine from Lovell Workwear in Cardiff, Wales. They have a number of options in color and design, with either full length or elbow-length sleeves. Even considering the cost of shipping from the UK, the price was competitive with the three North American suppliers I could find.

There has been talk for at least three years about IAP offering a smock, but nothing has ever happened. Captain Eddy used to offer one, but found that the hassle of dealing with a supplier on multiple sizes was not worth the effort.

Some people have bought welder's jackets for use as smocks. They have buttons or snaps rather than a zipper, but reportedly work reasonably well. Other people have bought inexpensive windbreakers at used clothing stores that serve the purpose. One person (a woman) reported that she wears one of her husband's old dress shirts - she just puts it on backwards!

Anybody ever try a welding jacket? They seem to be 1/2 the price of turning smocks, they clinch at the neck and wrists, plus they're fire proof (always a good idea considering my track record.)

I guess I'm just too tight, err cheep, I mean frugal, I wear and old hoodie sweat shirt, it zips up and gathered at the cuffs and waist it seems to work well. I do wish it was a little longer.

My wife bought a lab coat for me to use. I'm not sure if it's for me or her because she's also a clean freak. I use a small clip that they use to bundle papers with to close the collar. It's lightweight and covers me from the neck down to the knees. Not sure when she bought it but works great and it's not too hot.

Bought a welders jacket a year ago off ebay for $27. It works great.

Guess I am not the only one with chip problems. Thanks for all the suggestions. I also googled it and found more info. Thanks again. I'll be getting some protection.

Do you have a military surplus near by? I've read about guys getting desert field jackets with velcro collars for less than $20. Sorry I don't have any specifics.

What I did, was go to the Sally Ann store and bought two nylon jackets. They're as light as a feather, and you can get ones that use snap closures or zippers. They have elasticized cuffs, which I usually pull up to my elbows to be safe.

This afternoon I went to the ARC thrift store and bought a Rebock unlined nylon windbreaker for $7. I should have waited until Tuesday because that is senior's discount day. All clothes 1/2 off. I was in a hurry to get turning so I spent the $7. I cut about six inches off the elastic cuffs. The windbreaker reaches halfway down my butt so the length is OK. Thanks to whomever on this site suggested it. Could have chosen from several similar garments. Works well and the chips slide right off the nylon.
