I have a number of brad point drill bits that are dull and sitting. Before I start cutting and grinding, has anyone ever tried to change bits like this. I was thinking about grinding them down and then sharpening them on a drill Dr. and turning them into usable bits.

Johnnie, you can grind a brad point into a standard bit. but I would not do it in the drill doctor. it is going to take a lot of material off at first. you could get it ground roughly to the shape you need by hand and then finish it up in the doctor.

That was sort of what I meant when I said grind them and then use the DD. A nice 8" grinder is wasting away in the shop anyways. Thanks, I figured I would see if anyone else has attempted this before I destroyed anything else today.

Johnnie, Otherwise everything about a brad point is the same as a twist bit. somebody just ground the tip backwards. lol. and like Frank said, it is recycling, far more likely to touch that bit up as a twist bit and the DD than as a brad point.

John; I had a problem with some large bits that I couldn't fit between the jacobs chuck and the vise on my DP.

My solution was to cut 1/2" off the shank and then about the same amount off the drill end. I rough shaped on the grinder and then Drill Dr. Worked find!
