My Verizon plan expires in June and I am spending over $200.00 for the family three phone plan. I am still grandfathered under the unlimited data plan and using older phones that don't take advantage of Verizon's 4G LTE service.

I need reduce by cost but maintain the coverage and unlimited 4G data plan. So, I am looking at Walmart's Straight Talk plan using AT&T's coverage (I already have the SIM cards for AT&T).

Does anyone use Straight Talk under AT&T's coverage and, if so, how do you like the $45 per month service for unlimited phone, text, and data? What phone would you suggest?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Larry,

Just wanted to give you a heads up. I too am on Verizon and am grandfathered on the unlimited data plan, but was just told that if you decided to stay with Verizon and upgraded your phone, you loose the unlimited data. I will stay with Verizon as they have the best coverage at my home of all the networks...

Might help you with your decision...

Mike:

I understand. I can upgrade my phone if I pay full price for the phone and maintain my data plan.

Of course Verizon is more than happy to have me sign a new contract with a cap on my data use.

Ya, aren't they so nice...

Out to make every last buck they can...

Do some reading up on Straight Talk. Lots of complaints about their "unlimited" data and how they either seriously cripple your data speeds or start sending you nasty notices if you are a moderate or higher data user.

I looked into them when I bought my google phone but ultimately ended up staying with t-mobile.

Many of the generation I associate with who in their 50s or above have tried straight talk, but for one reason or another (usually cost) switched to Consumer Cellular. You pay for the phone instead of it being subsidized, but the bennefit is there's no set plan for X years. You can adjust it on a monthly basis to meet your needs.

They recommend however, that if you are a high traffic user that downloads a lot of multimedia stuff that you should stick with the major carriers. They too piggyback off AT&T infrastructure and offer good deals, but not the fastest speed. Worth considering if you want to cut costs, but not if you suck down a *LOT* of data every month.

Larry, I have an unlimited data plan through Sprint with five phones on it, and all of them are up to date smart phones($275-300mo[swmbo pays the bills and would know the exact price]:biggrin:. Down in the Metroplex, they have excellent 4G service. I suppose it all really depends on what you want.

We were paying a ton for at&t, then got straight talk, unlimited everything, where i live most phones dont work this one does, sometimes it goes out, we only got one now for when we go to town we take it,my son has 2 my dad has 2, my son had his in Rhode Island Va,and no problems now her in alabama, its nice to get a 48.00 bill now for 1 phone, my wifes family live in Texas and talks all day sometimes to her sister till the phones go dead, you will like it, check first to see if you got service in your area by going to straighttalk.com i think it is, that is how we found out,it says we dont have service in our area but they do, if it cant use voice it always gets out on text, you will not go wrong,

Used it for a couple years because the Coverage was great and so was the price. But then coverage got less and less. We are with T-mobile 115.30 a month unlimited everything with 2 phones. We can add a line for 10 more a month unlimated everything and the coverage is better than verizon around here. WHen I added up the cost of the straight talk and the phone for two phones it was only a little bit less expensive than t-mobile. It has been worth it. When we had issues T-mobile were very nice to deal with.

With Straight talk they use both the ATT and the Verizon Network, depends on the phone you purchase. When you look at the phones at walmart, the lower corner of the box will have what network they are on. My son used one for over a year and was on the verizon network with them.

Since you are on Verizon, check out Page Plus. Same type of deal as Straight Talk, only they use the Verizon network. If you like them, try Kitty Wireless, their largest dealer, who can set up automatic re-ups for you.

Scott.

I am on Sprint unlimited data with 2 iPhones and pay 165.00/month.
I travel some but never really have a problem with coverage. With Sprint any cell to cell call is free regardless of network. I think I have 1500 anytime anywhere minutes but because cells are free I never use more than 5-600. Been with Sprint for 10 years and have had no problems with service, customer support or coverage.

I suggest that you look at your usage history to see if you really need unlimited coverage on all your phones.

we have 3 iphones in my house, all on a 2GB data plan per phone, and in 2 years have never gone over on any of the phones and not really gotten close either.

a friend of mine that has a small IT company told me he uses his phone A LOT for work and still only rarely tops the 2GB mark.

My wife and I switched to straight talk last year, she is on at&t, unlimited for 50.00 and she loves it. I am on the verison plan for 30.00 a month, for 1000 minutes and 1000 texts. Have had no problems.
