Do I need to paint the blank before flying the tube? Or is it sufficiently opaque that I can get by without.

It is unlikely you will need to paint, that blank is pretty opaque.
HOWEVER, no one ever regretted painting and many have regretted NOT painting--if the material gets thin enough or your hole is not perfectly drilled, you may wish you had painted!! And you don't mention how thin your ends will be--an important piece of information!!!!

I paint the inside of all acrylic type blanks just in case. Also the choice of the paint color will often enhance the blank after turning. The cost is minimal, the time well worth it if it prevents problems later on.
