I cast my first blanks today. I started with big leaf maple burl that was full of voids and knots. I can't wait to turn them and see how they turn out.
I tinted the resin with color I picked up locally but I couldn't get it opaque. Seems like no matter how much color I added I could still see through the resin. What can I use to get more opaque colors? I have some wood I would like to cast in black or dark brown to fill the voids.

It sounds like you got the red blue yellow, or something like that,:biggrin: "castin craft" at Michaels??? That will not go opaque. Castin craft has limited opaques, and those I suspect you are using will NOT go opaque. For great colors, try Coastal Scents for "mica" Almost unlimited colors, and they mix and look gooooooood!!! You can buy samples and a little bit goes a long way! PS If you have Hobby Lobby available they carry a pigment called Pearl Ex. comes in several colors that also has given me some good results.

Michael's also has the pearl ex. Just an idea. Assuming you got the "castin craft" there. If not, then disregard this...:redface:
 
Thanks guys. I picked up the pearl ex and wow! A little goes a long way. What can I use for solid colors?
 
There are translucent dyes and there are opaque dyes. Sounds like you
only got the translucent ones so far.. I'd get some white opaque to start.
that way, you can mix most any translucent dye with it and at least get
a usable opaque blank. Not optimum, but it will get you started..
