Carbide Tools

Hi All,
I am looking for a good set of Carbide Chisels. I have tried the set that Penn State offers but the carbide tips come off. I like the carbide for turning acrylics and the really hard woods. Any info would be appreciated. THX

When I started turning, I didn't want to learn to sharpen chisels; I figured being able to turn a pen would be difficult enough.

I purchased the Easy Wood Tools rougher, finisher and detailer from my local Woodcraft store. The replaceable carbide inserts convinced me to try them.

Other than a Sorby Spindlemaster, those three chisels are all I use and I'm very satisfied with their performance. I went with their "mini" sized chisels and have had no issues or regrets with the choice.

The woodchuck penpro is a great tool and about half the of Easy Wood Tools rougher.

Ditto on the Woodchuck series from Ken. I have three of his tools and they are great. You would not regret your decision if you tried the Woodchuck Pen Pro. JMHO.

If you are mechanically inclined, and have the time, you can make your own. Buy the carbide tip (insert), mount on a steel rod, and insert into a wooden handle. Cuts the cost waaaay down. Check in our library for a tutorial. I love my carbide tipped tools.

jack, if you want to get rolling fast then I'd say call bitshird for woodchuck pen pro, now the advantage of his tools are that he is one of the active pen tuner members here so it's not like someone who doesn't know anything about turning. Plus his tool steel that he uses was designed by himself. You save your self lots of guess work rather than trying to design your own. He already done all of that.

The chucker of wood is the answer you seek!!!

I just got my pen pro, and am already addicted. The learning curve took me a day or two longer than most, but once i got it figured out, it is an amazing difference. Wicked good tool straight out of the box, even without a handle!! Or get a handle while you are there!
