Here is a blank that I turned today. When it was still a 3/4 X 5 1/2 blank the green was dark, so I decided to leave the tube unpainted and not to reverse paint the blank. My thinking was the brass color would accent the dark green. However, the green turned totally transparent and I do not know whether to mount the blank (Roman Harvest) or trash it and go for wood.

What do you think? All comments and criticism welcome as I am trying to decide if this is a waste of a kit.

A better picture would help. It looks fine to me from the picture, but by the way you described it, I might not be seeing the problem.

Looks like a pine cone blank or similar. I would recycle it to another purpose and not make it into a pen --- I would not be satisfied with the outcome.

Think needle case, use it to make a Christmas ornament, etc

Is there another pen that uses the same tubes that you could put it on instead? For instance I found the Cambridge to have the same size tubes as the Olympian (which is a lot lower cost components). And the Roman Harvest looks similar to the Cambridge, but I haven't looked up tube sizes. Just thinking out through the keyboard...

Hmmmmm

I'm going to tell you that your eyesight is probably better than mine and you know what your customers expect better than I do. So I think the best solution for you is to do what you think is best.

Added to that, I would say you probably lean toward chucking it or you wouldn't have asked for our opinion but if what was said here makes you want to use it "follow your heart".

Ok, if it looks less than what you wanted, here is your out...

If YOU have any doubt, either put it aside for now or mount it on another kit, otherwise you may regret 'ruining' an expensive kit on a flawed blank. I personally don't see the flaws you note, but it is YOU who you have to please in this case.

I'd go with this. Only way to keep it is if the tube shows uniformly through then it's a happy accident. But as Smitty said, might just chuck it, though I would save that for if you can't heat up the glue and not melt the resin.
