I got this piece of wood from a friend who found it in his garage, he has no clue as to what it is, neither do I, but I'll bet I can get some nice looking pens out of it.
Does anyone have a clue what kind of wood it is?

I agree with poplar. Those streaks would have been green when fresh, but they turn brown with age and ultraviolet exposure.
