A good friend of mine just ordered 2 projects from me. He wants a sketch pensil and a nice rollerball. Thats the easy part. He said i had all the creative freedom but he would like it Steampunk. Thats where i'm having a bit of creative block. I like the gear pens alot but would like to go a different direction with these. I also like the Iron clad pens i've seen. Any ideas on how i could incorporate both these ideas in one blank. I think i'm going to order a bunch of different watch parts as a start. but where to go from there. Please help me brain storm a bit, Any photo's and ideas would be greatly appriciated. To Tell ya a little about my friend who i'm doing these for. He's a very talented tattoo artist with a rather dark twisted mind. I'm kinda thinking a red and black acrylic and then incorporating brass and other gears and what not. other ideas.

Steampunk is all over the place. My wife does alot with old typewriters. A friend uses old steam fittings for some of her art and my brother has been collecting up old pressure and steam one lungers for something he wants to build with an organ.

How about finding a small gear that the pen could go thru? Maybe a period on off switch of some kind? Or how about a number reel from an old calculator?

What do you need for watch parts? I have hundreds of pieces I have been stashing away for myself and a couple projects I have in mind but might be able to work a deal out for you.

Thanks Healydays. Well to be honest i'm not too sure. I was looking on ebay and there are lots of listings where you can get lots of different watch parts for a little of nothing. Mostly gears, watch hands screws, you name it if it's in a watch its there. I thought i would sort them out and the see where that took me if anywhere.
 
Nothing wrong with that. When you are looking, make sure you're getting old pre-battery watches as the newer watches are a big disappointment inside as it's all circuits and plastic and no wheels. Also make sure the dial faces aren't plastic...
 
What if you did an iron clad pen with a widow that showed some of the gears etc like they were inside the pen. You could even get a small photo of your friend and insert it into the window so it looks like he's in the with the gears etc. peeking out.

Keven; Since your friend is a tattoo artist and a little on the dark side, why not find some small charms in the shapes of skulls, dragons, lizards, spiders, or other dark things. You could also get the small stick-on tatoos that they put on kids, and apply them to the tubes. Just my slanted thoughts. Jim S
 
Plantman do those stick on tats stick good on tubes. i would have never thought bout that.

Keven; I would paint the tubes flech color or white to make them pop. You could even use a bone or ivory acrylic blank.Turn it down to size, apply the tats, and finish. No casting. Flesh color would be my choise to make it look like skin. If the decals don't look as good as you want, just peal them off and start over. Jim S

In making the Ironclad blanks I have played around with watch gears and ever the thin jewelry chrams. Your only limited by thickness of the object you put on the tube. The tape is thin so you really don't lose much there. I made one the other day and used some of the thin copper wire they sell in the jewelry section of HL.Using the metal/copper ironclads with the wire and gears really has that steampunk look. Also if you have a hobby lobby near you, they sell 17 gram bags of watch gears for around $10. Its in the section where the clay stuff is. Have fun and Play with it, Skys the limit.

Going on Plantman's suggestion, Take a look at my thread on celtic ironclads, http://www.penturners.org/forum/f13/celtic-cross-ironclad-106537/, will give you an idea of what decals look like on the blanks as well. Black works best and there are some great tattoo clip art out there.

Thanks Redwil. Good tips. Just one question when you do your iron clad, do you place them in a preasure pot or do they cast ok without? casting is one thing that i have no experience with.
