Can anyone Id this wood?

Its from East Texas. High winds and crazy storms brought this tree down at my school. Grounds crew was cutting it up to haul off when I saw them. They cut and left about 15 pieces for me to take home.

Sorry no leaves left on the tree. Id take a picture of the leaves on the ground but after taking my students on a nature walk behind the school last month I found out there are at least 12 different type of trees back there.

I believe it is either silver maple or sugar maple. Though I am leaning towards silver maple without seeing the leaves

Ash almost always has dark heart wood, bark's too smooth for maple, and silver maple has dark heart wood also. I'm adding birch to my guess of beech.

Do you have alder in Texas?

It could be Alnus serrulata or Smooth Alder. Smooth Alder is a small tree that grows to about 40'. It grows in open sunny areas, of the east Texas Pineywoods, in full sun. There are also several other Alders that grow in Texas. Hazel, Common, Tag, and Black. That's my guess without seeing leaves or tree. Jim S

either the bark is wrong for Arizona ash, or the arborist that showed me what an Arizona ash is - was lying.

Not sure what it is, but it isn't Ash. Bark is way to smooth, Ash has kind of a diamond pattern to it. Not enough info to go on, sorry!

It looks like some sugar maple I got from a cutting crew here in San Antonio. Does the tree have some orange coloring in the wood - I couldn't tell from the pictures?

if you mean a silverleaf maple, the bark is wrong. I had one that I had to cut down due to disease.

The bark and the wood kinda remind me of Hackberry.
