I want to put a hone on the lathe which needs to turn away from you, or would it be easier to hone underneath, or stand behind the lathe?

I know how to do it correctly with an interlock switch. But my specific question is will it run in reverse? I know some DC motors are "biased" for optimum performance in the forward direction and running in the other direction causes excessive sparking.

Wonder if it will work for the turncrafter VS?

It should. Any DC motor will run forward and reverse by reversing the polarity of the power lines. That is all the modification is doing: putting in a 2-pole, 3-position switch that ends up wiring the motor Forward, off, Reverse.

One caution for the group. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES REVERSE THE MOTOR WHILE IT IS TURNING!!

You will damage the controller board because reverse voltage will be applied to the board. It will be damaged.
Interlock switches require you to pause in the center position and prevent going from forward directly to reverse.

Works good --- but

1. Voids the warranty on the motor

2. Going from forward to reverse without stopping the motor rotation between will fry the controller. (Did I mention warranty). - a 3 buck switch is not the same as a variable frequency drive costing several hundred bucks - or a controller with interlock that cost big buck too.

3. You need to carefully mark the 3 positions -- (and I like a separate on-off switch and using the selector switch for just direction) and make sure you put the selector switch where it will not accidently be switched.
