I realize you may think this is in the wrong section but, I'm going on a 7 day cruise on a schooner . I do not want to take my 10 lens and digital camera. At the same time what excellent small digital camera takes excellent close up imagers of pens? I'm not worried about price just quality. Any suggestions

Canon G12....newest version is the Dx (I think). I have the G11 which is a couple versions old....but this is a great camera. It is a professional quality point and shoot. It is one of the few P&S that will shoot in RAW. It has a macro mode that allows focusing to withing inches. You will not find a bad review on this camera. Every version from the G11 forward has an articulating screen. I shoot with this more than my digital SLR and thousands of dollars worth of lenses.

Schooner???? I would have to say something like the Canon Powershot D10. You didn't say where but this is a good camera if you snorkel or do any SHALLOW reef diving.

Yes Mike a 75 ft schooner up in the San Juan Islands this summer. -- for Our 40th anniversary. It will be our first vacation in 3 years as my wife has been taking care of her elderly father

I will check into the two canons

Some people like Canon, others like Nikon. On the Nikon side of things, take a look at the P7000. I bought one of these last fall, and I am more impressed with it all the time. It is a pro quality point-and-shoot. Yes, it shoots in raw. I like that it will save the same picture in both raw and jpeg. I also like that it will do a five-shot bracket, and save each of those shots in both raw and jpeg. It also does a wicked (and easy) panorama. The focusing is sharp and fast. Lots of programmed modes, and three user programmable settings. Just a sweet camera!

Good luck in your hunt! Lots of good cameras out there!

Scott.

If price is no object, do a little research. Not so long ago Nikon still offered a couple of cameras with lenes that were STILL Nikkor lens, STILL multicoated and STIll made in Japan instead of China.

The last time I looked at a Japanese made, Real Nikkor lens point and shoot camera, I decided that price was indeed a factor. That point and shoot camera was $900. I can't imagine what it would have cost with German Ziess optics

My choice if you are going to snorkel, probably not in those waters, is one of the Olympus Tough series. I have the 810 and Marla a 610. They went everywhere with us when we went to Belize last Christmas.

My son has a G12 that he carries in his pocket when he doesn't want to carry his two or three Nikons's and all the associated lenses... he loves the G12 and swears by it... he's a pretty good photographer and has a photo blog that he administers each week... he says it's a great camera.
