My brother-in-law upgraded his wife's DSLR. He tried to trade in her old D80 but they would only give him $200. It wasn't worth it to him, so he sent it to me. :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Oddly enough, the silly thing doesn't have a PC socket, so I can't use my lights yet. An adapter is only like $10, happily.

I've already been shopping for lenses. The Tamron 100mm macro looks pretty sweet... heh

Congrats! that is a nice Camera. You are liable to get lots of opinions on glass, but personally I have not liked any of the Tamron lenses I have used with my Nikons they seem to be way to slow to focus when using auto. Now you need to go grab an eye-fi card for geo-tagging and wireless transfer and you will be set for a long time to come...
 
My experience with Tamron MF lenses has been great. But I'll always be a Sigma fan for 3rd part lenses. That Tamron macro lens, though, has gotten some terrific reviews. And I'm not using autofocus for macro shots anyway. Shoot, I'd be surprised if I use AF for much of anything. I like picking the focus myself. :wink:

I hung onto some strobes and flashes that require a PC socket. It's pretty much just an open/close circuit. There are no metering functions passed through this socket.

Every camera used to have one. Then only SLRs had 'em. Now you have to pay extra for it.

But they can be as cheap as $10 if I don't care about brand. Which, for this, I don't.

The D80 does have hot shoe and it also will support a remote flash via the built in flash.

My family are Nikon users .. I use an older D200

Why not use the USB to a computer and control all functions that way?
 
If you nose around amazon you can find a nikon 50mm prime 1.8f lense for about $100 that will become your BEST friend. Great depth of field, crystal clear focus....... you have to zoom by walking.......but you WON'T be dissapointed!

I've always been a fan of the standard lens. But I found with my Minolta gear that I was happier with either an 80/100 portrait lens, or a 100mm macro.

Although flipping a 50mm gets you REALLY close. :wink:

$$$$$$ but well worth it..

The 50mm is a very good walk around lens.

I've been there. :biggrin:

Here's two I shot both using the built-in flash. My daughter was shot using full Auto mode. The pen was set to Macro mode, but otherwise unchanged. As expected, the flash is too harsh for the pen (duh). But it did well with my daughter. I let AF pick the focus point in both cases as well. Unsurprisingly the pen nib is out of focus. That's where the manual focus would come in.

This camera is VERY nicely balanced with the crappy kit lens. Which I hope doesn't mean it gets nose heavy with anything made with metal. :wink:
