I have done 2 different spalted woods, Pecan and Hackberry with CA. On both, in spots, a day or so after applying the finish, they have developed flat spots in the finish. It is like the CA was completely asorbed into the wood. On the Pecan, I went back and applied a couple more coats of CA and all is well. I just recently finished the HAckberry and haven't had a chance to refinish. Do I need to apply a sealer coat of some type prior to the CA finish?

I use CA as the sealer and finish. Spalted woods are typically more porous and will absorb more CA than the same non-spalted wood. A set number of coats will not always ensure complete coverage. Each wood is different, so keep adding coats until it is sufficiently covered.

I have coverage and can finish out to a mirror finish. Even use accelerator to set the CA with each application. It is a day or so later that things show up in spots.

Greg,

Have you been cleaning your pen with DNA prior to applying the CA?

I used to and seems like DNA caused the same problem that you just described. Even on some that I let dry for hours. I now clean my blanks with accelerator or acetone and the problem went away.

Dario,
I also had problems with a CA finish after useing DNA to clean the blanks. How long do you wait after useing the acetone to apply the CA. I would think it might cause problems if it is too soon.

Greg,

In my case a couple of minutes wait tops. No problem so far. One advantage of acetone...it evaporates really fast. BTW, it may act as CA accelerant too...how and why I don't know.
