Are the different brands of CA glue interchangeable? I'm currently using Hot Stuff brand and I'm thinking of changing to a cheaper supplier. As I run out of old stock I was wondering if the new CA will work with another brand.

Don't have an answer for you directly but, I switched long ago to buying from Monty and see no reason to ever worry about such things as different brands ever again.

Well, I would suggest you never mix old and new CA of even the same brands together (you can mix fresh CA of different thicknesses together to get a custom thickness I've been told). I would probably avoid mixing even fresh samples of different brands, as differences in the makeup might cause reactions.

As for starting a finish with one brand, finishing with another, I would think that it should be fine, as long as the old brand is cured before starting the new brand (otherwise you would effectively be mixing them on the blank...)

Others may have more experience and different opinions.

Monty is the best candidate to answer the comparability question. I do know that different manufactures have different CPS or cure ratings. I would think that mixing different CPS ratings could cause curing problems.

AND for the record, Monty's glue is as good or better AND less than half the price of Hot Stuff, Special T and Super T.

If you are talking about mixing bottle contents, then I would advise against it. If you are talking about a finish on a pen, where you have done 3 coats of thin in one brand and want to do 3 coats of medium in a different brand, then you should be ok.

For GREAT prices and quick free shipping on CA I use Mannie Steglich at woodenwonders.com He stocks all viscosities in quantities from 2 oz. to gallons. He also has the accelerator in 8 oz. I purchased a re-chargable bottle from him which you fill with accelerator and charge with compressed air. Works just fine.

I would advise against mixing the contents of two or more different brands of CA.
However, as has been said before, once the CA is dry, there should be no problem using a different brand for another coat.

Thanks for the info. I don't want to mix the two different brands together. I just don't want to throw my current stock away so I was curious if I was in the middle of say finishing a pen with the Hot Stuff brand of medium and ran out in the middle of completing the project can I go straight to a new bottle of another brand/vendor and continue with the pen finish without a compatibility issue. From what I'm hearing it shouldn't be an issue...we'll soon find out!

I have at least two different brands of medium and fast curing ca and regularly use them when finishing a pen. I've never had a problem using different brands but I don't mix them together either.
