I recently bought a M9x1 HS round die from Victor machine ("VME"). The die is chamfered on both sides, which means I can't cut a thread close to a shoulder. I've seen rethreading dies advertised with chamfers on both sides, and that sort of makes sense. But I can't see why a thread cutting die would have both sides chamfered.

I asked VME if all their metric HS round dies are chamfered on both sides. (I know the imperial dies I bought from them are not). Their response was:

"I cannot say if all our dies are like this (all our 9 x 1 are, from several sources) , but it is not unusual. "

They say it's not unusual. This is the first thread cutting die I've ever gotten that is chamfered on both sides. Maybe I've just been lucky with the other 30 or so dies that I bought. Anybody else ever gotten a die with both sides chamfered?

Well, now I have a couple questions to ask before buying in the future:

1) Is the die chamfered on two sides or one?

2) Where was the die made? The M9x1 from VME was made in China. I would rather have tooling made in the USA or Japan.

If you are buying dies and you want to be able to thread reasonably close to a shoulder, you might want to ask before buying.

A lot of the dies I own are chamfered on both sides, but they still have a starting side, but I guess you know that already. I always make a relief cut before the shoulder anyway.
