Maybe I'm not following you but why would you need bushings if you not using kit parts?

The only reason you use bushings is to make sure the diameter of the blank winds up the same diameter of the mating kit parts.

You are right. I have not made a kitless pen yet, but I was thinking if someone made their own nip and final the diameter was not an issue.:confused:

No, not an issue, at least the way I make mine. If you'de like and think it would help clarify some things, I can put a few photos together to give you an idea of how I make a section and how I fit the finials on.
 
The first set of bushings you linked to are rubber mounted for shock absorption. Great for mounting fans and motors but I don't think they would be any good for pen turning. I use callipers and measure to any size I want to turn to.
