I have a bunch of cherry burl cut offs saved for exactly this sort of thing. They were only cut in March though so are still fairly green.

Interested? If so please PM me.

I have been commisioned to make some pens for a presentation to a retiring forestry manager at blenhiem palace oxfordshire UK the birth place of Sir Winston Churchill using pippy burr oak grown on the estate they gave me a large chunk of burr oak and I have been cutting it up and have several peices to small for pens that are at the end of the burr or in the middle where it started to break up the burr has been in a wood shed for some time some of it is soft so casting it would stabilise it if you are interested please pm me also I am trying to get them to give me certificates or permission to print certificates for the pens/wood

I have a bunch of this mulberry that can't be used without casting. It isn't technically burl (I already got jumped on here for calling it burl ) but it is all scar tissue and has wild and wonderful grain and color.

Nice pieces of wood Sharon...!

As for being "jumped on" about the issue, I'm not surprised, as I had to correct some folks myself about the difference between a "burl" and highly figured pieces of wood which in my view can have a swirly grain identical to most burls and reason why I believe is quite OK to call it "burled wood" but not "burl".

Burls are very specific pieces of wood that can have a numbers of origins and reasons to develop however, some pieces of wood have grains that are far from straight, crossed/diagonal or circular, some even have "eyes" such as huon Pine and others, that doesn't make them a burl.

Where it gets a little messy is when, woods/blanks are put for sale and use the "burl" wood to ones advantage, if you know what I mean, as soon as people hear the word "burl", they think true burl formation wood, some will know the difference but most will not, and there is where I have a problem with, is using the "burl" wood if the wood is not a burl.

I don't have many burl species growing in my area however, I have a fair number of them that have developed some very nice "burled" areas, I call them what they are and if justifiable, I price them no different than I do with any true burl wood, the person buying it will know it the wood/blank justify the price, regardless of its name or grain formation type.

I know that, lots of people will read this post, and my words are more directed to them than to you so, don't get upset with me just because I'm "detailing/dismantling" your simple comment, is important that people know the difference and is up to us to make it right...!:biggrin:

Cheers
George

What kind of burl is it? Just curious

I have tons of Koa, curly Koa, Mango, Milo, Rambutan and other woods, I just store them in boxes thinking that one day I will make some blanks out of them, but if you want to do it for me and keep some for your work and effort, I have plenty, let me know if your interested, aloha.

Yes very interested. Not just looking for good dimensional wood for blanks but wood with holes, chunks missing, burls and other deformities that I can cast with resin. If you have this type of stuff I will make a trade deal with you.

I do, just been super busy with Linda's transplant Doc's and clinics and been a little sick myself this past week and the post office was not high on my list, sorry.
