Last night I tried my first acrylic pen. A simple slimline pencil kit turned B2B. I bought some tripoli and white diamond from AS a while back to buff these materials.

Just sort of wondering how to use it. It is hard as a rock, is it suppose to be that way? I touched it to the wheels and I could not get it to take. I put a little water on the blocks of compound and tried again, still it does not appear to take to the wheel.

I have never used Tripoli and white diamond before only things like rosin for honing tool edges. So I was expecting it to be a little soft. So, is this suppose to be this hard or can it be softened with water or something else or am I just going about this wrong?

I did finish the pen, I dug out the buffing and polishing compound that I had for the car and used a soft cloth while spinning on the lathe. The finish came out, OK, I could still see small scratches so I do want to try out the buffing wheels soon.

Thanks,
Scott

I can't comment specifically on AZ products but the bars I received with my Beall system are also quite hard. With the 8" wheels spinning (1750 rpm in my case)you can hold the bars against them and it will load the wheels fine. In fact early on I seemed to put too much on the wheels. Hopefully you aren;t trying to use the bars against the actual turning like the HUT PPP wax sticks are you???

Both compounds are fairly hard. With the Tripoli, you may need to hold it against the buffing wheel for several seconds the first time or two that you use it to "load" the wheel. It should be fairly obvious on the wheel since it's brown or tan in color. For the white diamond, it doesn't take much to do the job. Just a couple seconds against the wheel should do the trick. And since it's white, you won't really see it on the wheel, but trust me, it's there. You shouldn't use water on them at all.

As Lee implied, the friction from the wheels rolling past the bar should heat it enough after a few seconds to allow the material to load onto the wheel.

OK, I will give it a try again.

I guess it might have been the cold weather affecting it as well as being hard. I think that it was only 10 degrees, maybe lower, in the shop last night.

Thanks for the tips.

If you want to see a demo of the Beall system here is a link to a video file at Woodcraft.

Might want to save the file to view: http://www.woodcraft-gallery.com/StreamingMedia/bealbuff.wmv

I have bought a lot of polishing compounds from many different sources over the years for projects other than pens. All have been hard but that doesn't prevent using them. As suggested, just hold against the spinning wheel, it will pick up compound. Not much is needed but just touch some more if you think it is not doing the job you want.

All of the ones I have purchased have been hard. They have all loaded up fine. It takes a few seconds to load up the first time. After that is basically a quick touch.
