Hey guys, I am looking to try my hand at turning buffalo horn (with a gas mask, fan, and the vent fully open). Just curious where is a good place to buy the buffalo horn? I know PSI has a blank but just curious if there is a better place to buy, or a better price to buy. Thanks guys!

Buffalo horn is nice material, makes a nice pen, does not smell all that bad, is easier to turn than antler, and crackes. Too many other nice materials to use. But, everyone needs to make at least one. The price is about the same from all vendors that sell it. Pick one and get after it.
Do a good turn daily!

I might have one I would be happy to get rid of . I will warn you , it STINKS to turn , worst smell i have ever had the displeasure to smell and the pen made from it will probably crack , The 4 that I made ALL cracked . 1 about a week later 2 a couple of months later and the last about 6 months later , leaving me with 4 very unhappy customers that I had to give better acrylic pens to to keep them happy....well....just not as unhappy , cost me, big time !!!
I'll check in my rejects bin for you .

Edit:
Don , let me guess , you like Limburger cheese .... LOL

hum... Makes me wonder if its even worth it to turn since they crack and they are going to be gifts... Just thought it would be something different, but not worth it if I end up with an unhappy customer and having to make them a new one. Sure, I like turning, but not for a replacement because the previous one broke on them, just doesnt send a good image.

WARNING!! Buffalo horn cracks. period. It also warps out of shape. Time does not solve these issues. I started to try and import a container load of it several years ago. In that process I gave it a very thorough testing. It failed miserably in every test. Some immediately some not for a couple of years. Every pen I made out of it has been thrown away and I no longer offer it as a pen. I also never imported it.

Bummer, I just checked the one pen I made in stock and sure enough, there are some tiny cracks at the end. Guess I have a new carry pen for now. Anyone want some free Buffalo Horn?

Sorry to disagree but I have turned at least 15 with no cracks or customer complaints. In fact I was using one Today that is at least 2 years old, no cracks. I sell a lot of them.

Where do you get your horn? I wonder if that makes a difference. Did you CA finish it or did you just polish it?
