Glen, it is a shame about the Gold and Blue, they always go well with Buckeye Burl
But what you were left with, is a Beautiful Buckeye Burl Blank.
Really your 2nd prize is still Fantastic, the Finished result is Special.
Great Fit and Finish.
Remember that "Post-it Notes" were a "3M " failure also.

On the next blank i think i will back paint with black or dark blue to see it that will help...or red

I think the oroblem is that "buckeye" and "blue & gold" (aka maize & blue) mix lilke the Hatfields & McCoys. Or oil & water. Or..., well, you get the idea.

Just kidding, just kidding. Nice work.

BTW, you don't need to backpaint wood. It's opaque to begin with.

In pic 1, there are a couple of "eyes" peeking through the blanks!
I think it is the dreaded "BLANK GREMLIN".

The blank still looks cool!

With a little backpaint experimenting, I think these could have a really cool 3D effect.

I think I'd back pain it a bright blue. hat should bring out the blue in he resin. Since the tube is gold, and that didn't help the color much, I think it's a waste to try & bring out the gold.

Use the dowel trick. Paint a wooden dowel different colors along its length. Drill the appropriate hole into a small section of blank to fit the dowel. Turn and finish as best you can to replicate a finished product thickness. Just remember that it will be much more fragile without a tube. As you slide the dowel through, you should get a pretty good idea of what the different colors would look like. This way, you get to try many different colors, and only sacrifice a very small portion of material. And you can keep the dowel for later use.
