I've started to turn one of the Buck Eye Burl blanks from the Exotic Mystery box,
Had no problems drilling or glueing.
There turning pretty darn good, but as I get down a bit I'm seeing a few holes. I assume I can
use thin CA and fill these as I get closer to final shape.

Whats the best finish technique for this material?
I'm considering a CA Gloss finish.
Any other options?

Thanks

Dave

IMO for unstabilized buckeye burl, CA glue is far and away the best option because it's essentially a durable layer of plastic over the wood. The wood itself isn't much stronger than styrofoam, so it really needs the extra protection.

I would use thick CA to fill in voids prior to sanding.

I agree with Andrew (@BHuij) on the CA.

But... I would use medium CA for the voids. I have had mixed results with the thick because it doesn't get down into the little checks, cracks, voids as well. Just my two cents.

I am quite sure that all the buckeye burl we sell is stabilized, including the mystery boxes.
Yes Sir, this was from the Mystery Box and yes its stabilized. Had a few little holes to fill, But I finished it up with a CA finish late last night.
Turned out very nice. I'll post a pic later. This was my first attempt with a burl. Now I know!!

Go online and buy some ground turquoise. The next time you turn BEB and there are holes, fill them with the ground turquoise. Glue it in with thin CA, and then finish turning. You'll be pleased with the results.

Depending on the pen you're making, we're often down to very thin material by the time we get it to shape. sometimes the bug hole will go straight through to the brass tube in that case I put some sanding dust from the wood into the hole. It will show up darker than the rest of the wood, but in my opinion, that's better than looking through to the brass.

Here is the end result. Personally I dont think it looks good. First attempt with a burl product.
