This is my first experience with a broken piece. The transmission was broken (plastic internal piece broke in two) right out of the baggie. Do you contact the vendor for a replacement or is it just a loss?

Yep. Explain it was received damaged and would appreciate a replacement.
Most vendors if you contact them and nicely explain the problem will ship you a new transmission. If they wont however Woodnwhimmsies along with Exotic blanks sell Cigar transmissions seperately so you wont lose the kit.
