Bringing out the grain

I have turned several pens recently that I hit with a light coat of BLO prior to starting the CA/BLO process to finish the pen. The grain really pops, but I'm not sure if there will be along term effect. Russ Fairfield's seemed to indicated that BLO would co-exist well with CA, but I've also read several posts about CA finishes over an oily wood not turning out well.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, or is there a better way to bring out the grain before applying a CA/BLO finish?

Just let the BLO cure for about a week before putting on your top coat.

You don't really need the BLO to pop the grain. Just sand properly and apply CA...that is what I do at least YMMV.

If you need/want the yellowing effect of BLO then yes do as Steven said but I don't wait that long...overnight usually works well for me but note that I am in Texas []

I don't know if this is right or wrong but it works for me. Put BLO on let it set a few minutes, wipe off then treat it like fricton polish and heat it up good, let it cool down then put CA on. This is a pretty dry climate if you are in a high humid place it might or might not work.
