Made my dad a box. (Was supposed to be a Father's Day present, but it took me forever to build—I started in February and just finished). Was going to be a humidor, but my dad gave up stogies (probably a good thing) so I lined the inside with leather and made it a valet box. The woods are maple and padauk. Finished with danish oul.

Awesome job on the box!! The spline in spline corner accents are unique and I think the leather lining is a good call...well done!

Thanks. There are definitely flaws. I messed up the mortise for the hinges. And the leather work could be a little crisper in the corners. But it's been 15 years since I'd attempted a box like this so not bad overall. Plus, the Shakers always used to intentionally introduce at least one flaw in all of their work because, in their view, only God could create something that was perfect. So that's what I'm saying is the reason for the hinge mortises!😏

I always love this kind of work. It is a change from pen making and still keeps our woodworking skills in tact and sharpened The splines are a very nice touch. The design is well thought out and the mix of materials plays well. Thanks for showing and I am sure he will love it. Never point out the flaws because as you said it is hand made. Nice work.
