I'm not a bowler so sorry for my ignorance. A while back a friend gave me a piece of bowling lane wood from an Alley that was being replaced in San Francisco. I have no idea what type of wood it is. It's laminated (2 pieces about 1" thick) and looks like maybe Ash. Does anyone have an idea of what it might be? If a picture would help I can include later.

I would have thought it would be made of maple. I guess ash or something else may be used further down but as I recall, up where the people are and the approach area looked like maple in the Midwest.

It's most likely maple or pine. Hard Maple was used for the approach and back-end...where I lived Pine was used to fill in the middle stretch, not like most of the pine we see today

Here you are.. straight from Google.

There are two types of surfaces used in bowling alleys - wood and synthetic. Wooden alleys are made from maple and pine, with maple being used for the approach, pin deck, and the first 12 feet of the alley, and pine being used for the rest.
