So, I majorly blew it on a cigar, and I'm wondering if anyone else has been similarly stupid & discovered ways to rectify the situation - since it's a blank I'd rather not sacrifice.

I found myself out of rear tubes & had to cut a replacement, but, probably due to exhaustion, managed to mis-measure the length by a whopping .085", and didn't discover it until the pen was assembled - so it ended up too short and, needless to say, the pen neither fits together cleanly, nor functions.

First of all, is there any way to disassemble the rear of cigars without destroying the plastic components in the transmission? It looks like an 11/32" transfer punch might be able to press it from the center (hopefully without damage to the threads), but that seems likely to just force the transmission further into the tailpiece, rather than knocking it out. Is there something saner than fabbing up a jig to fit under a partially unscrewed tailcap & using a drill press or lathe carriage/tailstock backwards to pull it apart?

Second, even assuming it's all disassembled, any thoughts on the best way to extend the barrel length when the tube length is obviously stuck as it is? Considering the press-fit portion of the band is fairly long, I was considering a contrasting segment between the band & blank, possibly with a dot of epoxy or sleeve retainer if it doesn't seem secure, but am I overlooking anything and/or just setting myself up for other problems?

Thanks for any help,

oh man, that's rough. You could get into segmenting and cut a small piece, stick a tube in it and then graft the pens together. I would probably turn a small segment off the existing pen segment and slide the new segment on to that tube along with your smaller tube. It would help with alignment and structure.

good luck

Hrm, I hadn't considered that possibility - basically using the existing tube as a tenon to mount the new tubed segment. That might actually work.

Or, well, might actually work if I could get the damn thing apart in the first place. 😭

I don't understand the problem. The transmission of a cigar unscrews from the transmission coupler. Use a 15/64" transfer punch to drive the nib out, and then a 23/64" transfer punch from the nib end to drive out the transmission coupler.

If you're talking about the upper barrel, a 9/32" transfer punch will drive out the finial and clip. Then use a 23/64" transfer punch to drive out the center band.

What @Brian G said

You can try to "scrape down the side of the tube" with the punch too. That will keep you away from the plastic inside the transmission.

Ergh - I'm an idiot. Serves me right for trying to figure it out while exhausted & half asleep. I somehow had it in my head that the transmission was press-fit in the upper barrel, rather than a sliding fit into the finial tube.

(if it's not obvious, I've let myself get horribly rusty, and the pen in need of repairs was assembled quite some time ago)

Thanks for straightening me out,
