Recall I said the BLO in a plastic bottle developed a crystals on it. Well...went to use it this morning. Had the consistency of cold molasses. Any way to salvage or recover it? Or toss it?
Disregard the post. I had tossed it and my wife emptied the trash to be picked up today. However....I'm going to make sure I used a smaller bottle of a few ounces instead of the 16 ounce bottle. Handier than using the quart can.
I recently used a full quart of BLO. I was rebuilding a yard cart - one of those with 26" bicycle tires. The I used the BLO to weatherproof the 3/8" plywood. Before pressure treated wood came on the scene in large numbers, coating facia and other outside weather boards with BLO (and other oils) before painting was not uncommon. There are arguments pro and con if that is/was beneficial. For my cart, the water did run off the first rain. For yard carts, every year or at least every other year application of BLO if not painted with normal paint on top of the BLO.
Hank, mine sat for along time. Hopefully, now that I'm making more pens, the remainder of the quart won't last long. To check it, I shook it after I tossed the BLO syrup, it sloshed like it was full of water. Going to put a small amount in a small bottle to be more convenient when pen turning.
I've had my Boiled Linseed Oil in a StopLossBag for several years. It has the same consistency and color as when I first opened it up. I have most of my finishes (and components like de-waxed shellac, walnut oil, etc.) in these bags. - Dave
