Everyone...
A buddy of mine has a 70's craftsman 12 inch bandsaw. He needs to find a motor as his has gone for a well deserved nap. Believe it or not it was an old 1/3 hp 1725rpm motor. I think he can go up to a 1/2hp 1725rpm or maybe even a 3/4hp 1725rpm motor. He wants to be able to occasionally resaw some walnut, oak, cherry etc for his intarsia projects. What do you think would be the better choice?

He does plan on a 80" x 1/2" 3 TPI timberwolf blade after he gets the motor. (anyone doing a group buy?)

HF sells a 115v single phase 5.5 amp motor for 79.99.

1/2 HP
1725 RPM

they also have a 115/230V 3/4" HP 1725 motor with 5/8" dia shaft listed for 74.99

Item 36550-6VGA

and then for 126.99 for Item 4114-6VGA you can get a 1-1/2HP 115V 3600 RPM motor that they describe as perfect replacement for BS, Lathes, Table Saws and other constant running machinery
 
On a 12" bandsaw, go 1/2hp or even 3/4 if you are looking at newer rated motors. The newer ones are "over rated" compared to what the motor would of been on that saw new. Search aroudn craigslist, you can find a 1/2 hp motor for maybe $25 if you keep an eye open. Heck, I have about 6 motors sitting around the shop right now.
 
I'm with the 'don't go too big' school. A half horse will do him fine. Do keep the speed the same. The comment about resawing with a 12" bandsaw is interesting. A small BS like that might not handle such a heavy chore for long.

Have you tried blowing compressed air throught the motor? I thought the ShopSmith needed a new motor, because of it's enclosure, sawdust, that fine silky kind had taken over. One blast of 40 psi air and ready for another 21 years...

Is your friend still looking for a motor?
I happen to have a motor off of a 1970's Craftsman 12" bandsaw.
I am not sure of the horsepower,I think it is 1/2 or matbe 3/4, but will check it out tomorrow if you are interested.
