Has anyone explored using the blockchain to track their pens?

I have thought about it for awhile as I have studied it and am trying out a blockchain for artists:

It is an interesting way to add interest to our pens. I will play around with it. If enough folks think it is valuable and that their customers would be interested in it, then I can research it further and look into something us for our products. Please check it out and let me know what you think.

Just more ways to be tracked. Is there not too much invasion of privacy now??? I won't be around but we are not far from being stamped with an electronic tracker when you are born. It is coming. Cell phones being monitored and now all these home electronic voice things tracking you. Every piece of electronic equipment you bring in your home has potential of tracking you. Your car is being tracked. Who knows where responsibility will land with a project like that. I would not touch it with a ten foot pole.

Why in the Great Googly-Moogly would I want to track the owner of my pen once it's left my shop, and how would digital tracking increase interest?

Well, it isn't really for us, but for the buyers. When you give away your pen you transfer the ownership to them and then they can show future buyers or their kids or anyone where they got it from and when it was created. If they decide to transfer on the ownership digitally then they can do that too.

In this world of easy copies, it creates a digital record that helps identify your item as something unique.

A system like this could be extended upstream to the trees that the pens are made out of. It is a gimmick but people eat this stuff up. Check out this bourbon that is tracked at sea:

It's also an interesting idea for the maker, because blockchain is already being used as copyright protection for artworks. Especially for stuff like photographs which are difficult to pin down their source. If you're an artisan doing truly unique things with your blanks and pens, something like this would give some measure of "claim" on your creative process (and it looks like you could pursue legal action if need be - but it's hard to tell how that'd shake down since it's such a nascent technology).

That said, I'm not sure this is a value-added for a typical pen buyer nowadays. I imagine in the future as pens become status symbols and their pedigrees start to matter, it'd be something cool to offer. Certainly can't hurt now.

I can certainly see value here at the level of AAW penturners such as Broadwell Studios, where pens go for big dollars, and I can see it adding a degree of exclusivity and prestige to the high end items, or where the origin of protected woods may be suspect. For the rest of us, who choose to track our owners, perhaps a more generic Certificate of Authenticity would serve the same purpose.

Those are some amazing pens at Broadwell!
I think for auctions this would be a neat addition to a charity listing.
