Here's the project for my day. This started out about three times this size but that did not last. Before I could even get it roughed out I found a big crack that had to be cut out. The wood is Black Oak Burl aka Black Jack---at least thats what they call around here. This is a first for me.
She is very wet and has several coats of oil buffed in on the lathe.

Nice! Yes, they call it Black Jack around here too. Also word is, it will tear up a chainsaw (harder than white or red oak)

Hmmm -- sounds like pretty dangerous wood to me. You better ship me any you have left over so you don't hurt yourself! :-)

Beautiful vase! By the way, most of the things I turn keep getting smaller and smaller and smaller.....

Wayne that blank is only one of the five that came from the same burl-----you would not believe the pen blanks---but the wood is very VERY wet----if this is like red oak who knows what the pen blanks will do as they dry.

That's a heckuva piece of wood. I've got a blank out right now that has a crack in it. I'm thinking of 'suturing' it up and turning as is. I'm a little crazy that way.

Nice work in any case. Gotta luv wood that looks like that.

I think that since is it so beautiful and so wet. You should sent it to me in California so it can dry slowly and not crack. I will make sure that it remains solid and gets good use.
