Black line in sugar maple?

I have received some sugar maple and started turning it. I noticed it has a black line running straight down the side of the piece. Should I remove the line or does it matter? The line looks like it was drawn with a pencil.

Is that a spalt line or a crack?

If it's a spalt line it should be ok.

If it is a crack you are going to have a problem if you are turning a pepper grinder

It is a line not a crack. I shaved a piece off with a knife and on the shaving it had the line in it.

Then it's spalt, you should be ok.

I don't know how you would remove the line anyway. It isn't great looking spalt, but it does add some character.
