It really is funny but Black Friday was always a US thing and now it seems more and that it is becoming a Canadian thing. Never heard about a few years ago and now it's the rage. Go figure.

Certainly can't blame the world for capitalism. After all, most don't remember why Thanksgiving and Christmas exist...I saw some place that had their Christmas stuff place on the showroom floor back in October!!!

Scott (I'm doing Black Friday for awhile) B

Not to mention that your event boxing day is now becoming popular here in the Mich. area. I thick that the biggest driver of all the sillyness, is the fight for the consumers dollar.

They said yesterday that Sears holding of Canada is getting rid of 800 employees to start. That due to the influx of the US big box stores Sears and Kmarts is being beat to death!

Personally I don't shop at either unless I need what they only have. Sears took their slogan about "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back" from above their doors long ago.

They jack the prices up on items so they can give bigger discounts for the season. This was from a shopping analyst on the tube yesterday. By afternoon as I went by both the local mega mall and the neighborhood Meijers(same kind as Wally World) both the parking lots were normal for a weekday.

With the net I think that it is forever changed they way we buy.As been said,Christmas stuff is on the floor in one isle over from Halloween.

On one of the news panels yesterday, a couple of the analyst agreed that after the holidays there will be a further tightening of the consumer landscape as more stores large and small close there doors.

I found that the perfect gift for teenagers and people of an adult nature is cash. That why the only complaint could be about the amount:wink:! Never a return or wrong color.

Hope the holiday was enjoyable to all.

Don't participate, Standing outside in the cold for one of 10 door busters, or to save a few Dollars fighting a bunch rowdy idiots in not my idea of fun. Now add to that the paid protesters blocking the streets to some stores and interfering with my rights is just to much. Just to old for this stuff.

Some stores will not survive the trend toward the internet.

However, when Eddie Lampert took over Sears, the writing was on the wall. He is a real estate guy---Sears has real estate that is valuable.

Similarly, JCPenney "changed their image", eliminating sale prices a few years ago. Now that their sales are in the toilet, there is a new CEO attempting to keep them above water. He MAY succeed, (they have a fair supply of cash) but it is at least equally probable that he will not succeed fast enough and JCP will be in bankruptcy.

Yes, these ARE trying times for retailers---but Macy's just reported a record quarter.

The "well managed" will survive---but they will also increase their "internet marketing presence".
Target's Black Friday internet sales doubled this year, over last.

Happy Holidays!! We KNOW many of you are "couch consumers" and we are grateful for that!!!

I was reading a news article last week and it was talking about the big box stores are going to slash prices in the new year in Canada. That is US big box stores. Target has made a real big presence in Canada and have not done well at all. They are nothing like the US target. " What they think they come to Canada and try to hit us for higher prices" just for crossing the boarder. WRONG. Yep it all about the internet now. But for us in Canada the shipping is becoming nuts. I placed an order with a member here this week and the shipping was just about the same as the product. I am thinking of becoming a Canadian distributor for some of the vendors on here.

Lin, I don't know WHY you would be distressed about expensive shipping---after all, it entitles you to ridiculously long wait in Customs, as well as a potential "Customs clearing fee" added to the cost you expected!!!!

All this AFTER the North America Free Trade Act-----just think what it must have been like BEFORE such sweeping legislation???

(All of this is accurate, but firmly sarcastic for those who don't know me well enough to realize that!!)

They got their butts kicked.

Lin the Black Friday thing here is just our businesses trying to counter the cross boarder shopping by Canadians looking for deals.

I think it was about 15 years or so ago that Arco tried to open their chain of gas stations here in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley and learned it ain't like at home. They expected business to be like it is in the US. Have their gas a few cents cheaper than the other stations and no one would follow. Canada's stations all matched every price drop that Arco made within minutes. It was great for us  for a couple years until Arco gave up and left. :frown: Then the gas shot back up to what could be bled from us again.

Since Boxing Day sales are starting to show across the line I wonder how long it will take before the US starts to celebrate our October Thanksgiving and we theirs? :bulgy-eyes:

I dare not think what it could have been like it must have been awefull.
And we all know that the free trade deal was not to be benificial to us only to the big giants with big pockets. And back to the "customs clearing fee" I am doing an experiment with this to see what day it lands at the boarder, because sometimes it get charged and some times I don't. I think it all has to do with if it lands there on a Mon or Fri or who is trying to clime the ladder faster in the parcel depot.:biggrin:

Actually, it was much simpler to ship to Canada before NAFTA... less paperwork and simpler terms of shipments.... you had only to fill out the Canadian invoice and away you go.... Afta Nafta you still filled out the Canadian invoice, plus the NAFTA invoice plus the shipper's export declaration (wasn't needed before NAFTA)...
