My friend Olga picked up this birch branch when we were out a couple of years ago. I decided to see what it would look like turned. It's pretty bland, but does have a little grain. I've decided to go ahead and make a pen with it, since she went to the trouble of picking it up. She'll like it. Danish oil darkened it slightly, and brought out a little more grain. I thought about staining it, but haven't had good results with that in the past. Has anyone used Doctor's amber walnut oil? Is it any darker than Danish oil?

Small limbs are usually fairly bland, but as you noted, oil can sometimes enhance the appearance and a knot or two can also help. I generally use teak oil on mine.

I think I've decided to use Danish oil, then finish it with Pens Plus. Just the fact that she picked it up and I went to the trouble of making a pen out of it will mean a lot to her.

Jim: The grain certainly pops more with the finish. BTW hope you and your family are staying safe from the fires.
Yes, I think it'll look even better with the Pens Plus on it. There are no fires currently close enough to endanger me. My aunt had a close call, but is safe. Thank you for your thoughts.
