I have been asked to make a chalice for a church that was est. in 1843. I thought it would be nice to make it out of BOW. I was think a piece about 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 6 would suffice. Are there any sources in the states that would carry this big of piece? I can always go to the BOW web site, but I have heard that the lag time can be quite long. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Nolan has always supplied me with exquisite BOW pen blanks, I would check with him on the 4 1/2 X 4 1/2. Beautiful wood, excellent customer service.

Thanks Andy, tried Nolan and he doesn't have anything that big. Looks like I'm going to have to use something else for the chalice.

If you give up on the precise source there are several sources of olive wood that are likely to have what you need.

Turns the same, smells the same, just does not have the same providence. Cooks, and Gilmer Woods are two likely sources

Bobby ... Did you find what you were seeking in BOW? If not, a chunk of Dogwood as suggested above may be just what you need. Dogwood is reported to be the tree that the cross was made of.

Have'nt tried Woodcraft yet, will be going to Texas at the end of the month, so will check them out. If I can't find a piece of BOW, my next option may be the Dogwood. I have also heard the it was the wood that the cross was made of. Thanks for all the help, it's appreciated.

Well, I can't help you with the BOW but I can help you with FPOW (Fleureau Peninsula Olive Wood) or AUOW (AUstralia Olive Wood). I have cut olive trees 3 years ago that were 20"+ in diameter so I "should" be able to cut a piece that size for you, the problem is going to be the freight to get it to you within a couple of weeks. A piece like that should weight about 1kg if not more, wood is not green but is not dry either so, its all up to you...!

Contact me if you need me...!

Cheers
George
