I want to get a larger Lathe than my trusty Jet Mini. Used would be great, but I haven't found one. I want at least a 16" swing, and variable speed. Jet 1642, Rikon 70-500, Powermatic 3520B, all are possible. I just don't know of other brands. Im in Atlanta and would like to pick up and save on shipping costs, but would travel around SE. Any ideas, recommendations, and sources would be greatly appreciated. Jet 1642 is my leader. Thanks

Steve ... I don't know where you are in the Atlanta area, but if you want to try out a JET 1642 I have one in my shop and you would be most welcome to drop in one day and give it a spin. MY place is out in Tucker just off the Stone Mountain Highway outside I-285. Really easy to get to!

You just have to show up with Coke or Pepsi and a few hundred doughnuts for a bribe ...

Check my profile for my e-mail and get in touch if you want to. E-mail is far better than the telephone as I am in and out all the time these days.

Try joining your local wood turning club. There is often a member of the club changing or upgrading their lathe and selling the old one. That is how I got my Jet 1642.

You might consider the Robust Sweet 16, Stubby S750, or Oneway 1640. They are all rather pricy but quite nice.

Steve ,
that part about traveling the Southeast; I just drove from Raleigh, NC to Leesburg FL to pickup a Delta Unisaw. The price of gas went up over a dollar per gallon the morning after I arrived. I spent as much on fuel as the purchase of the saw.
Thankfully the Unisaw is like new and included a dust collector and Unifence.
Good luck in your quest, and make it an adventure.
Michael

Lathe

Steve,

I have the Nova 1624-44, and I am thrilled with it. Very well built machine with a smaller footprint. Perfect for bowls, platters, pens, etc. Extensions available to lengthen the bed if needed. When I brought the mail in last night, Woodcrafts newest flier was in there. I paid $999.00 when I bought it, and the current price at Woodcraft is $1199.00. However, they now have it on sale for $849.00. In my mind, that is a steal!!!!

Good Luck,
Dan

Not sure why urls won't work, but Redmond & Sons is located in Newman GA. If you Google them will find them on the web.

Know a man that got a quote from them on a Jet 1642, and turned around bought one from "Tool Nut," also on the net. Got free shipping to his house. He did buy a Bandsaw from Redmonds scratch and dent section. This was a few years back.

Steve,
I don't know anything about the Rikon or the Powermatic, both are beautiful machines in the catalogs...

I looked at the Jet 1642 and liked the EV control, but it wouldn't work in my shop because of the way I'm set up.... to use it out board, you have to slide the Headstock to the opposite end of the ways... if you can live with the Reeves speed control, take a look at the Jet 1442... the headstock will swivel 360 deg... they say maximum outboard size is 29 inches.. haven't tried anything that large yet, but I really like mine.

I believe you are mistaken about that Jet 1642 feature.
I have the Grizzly G0632 which is very similar to the Jet.
Please contact me off-forum and I will be happy to share with you researched information and personal experiences about the two lathes. It is, for whatever reason, a hot subject here that some cannot discuss calmly on forum, as was recently seen on another thread.

Edit: By gumbo, after looking up the Jet 1642 in a couple ads, I did find out that a swivel head capability is not listed. The Grizzly, otherwise, near- clone, G06332, does have a swivel head that allows for outboard turning with the head located anywhere on the bed. This is my lathe and I have found that feature to be very-very handy.
