best brand of drill bit??

I am looking for a new set, as all inclusive as I can get, of drill bits. standard and metric. Milwakee sells a set on amazon for around $125.00 that looks good...
Any suggestions?

I had the same question a few months ago. I played around with a lot of diffirent types. Get the 115 piece set from Harbor Freight, and the the Drill Doctor. You get both of those for the same cost. The HF set was so sharp I cut myself when pulling one out. Once they get dull I will start shappening them with the Drill doctor. That is the best I have found.

Does the Drill Dr. work really well and will it do all kinds of bits? I've been seeing more and more posts about it. Guess I'll have to do some research on it. Harbor Freight is my "toy store"... just don't tell my wife. [;)]
 
I have a couple of the large HF sets, but for pen I nearly exclusively use Pilot-drillbits from DeWalt. They have one set in 1/64" increments and up to 1/2" diameter, covers nearly all my needs for pens.

The DD does not to brad points. I have the DD 750 and it saves me a bundle on bits. It does a very good job of sharpening. The bottom of the line DD does not do all that well, IMHO, and even the 750 does not sharpen 1/8 and smaller ones well. 3/16 and above to 1/2, the 750 does well.

I have the HF set of drill bits and the DD sharpens them better than new. I also have close to a hundred other bits collected over the years, one by one or in small sets. These are not cheap bits either. I got tired to buying new bits when one got dull, even just a little. The DD allows me to use the old bits just fine.

The DD is not for everyone. Someone here sold theirs last year because they couldn't figure it out, even with the booklet. It is not that difficult IMO, but takes 3 or 4 steps to do it right.

I spent about $125.00 for mine 4 years ago and saved that much money within a couple of years. (This cost, to me, includes aggravating down time and travel to and from hardware store and the price of Japanese bits. [:o)] )

The Drill Doctor is an excellent tool. I consider them a 'must have' for any shop. If you buy one do get the larger model which will do up to 3/4" bits.
 
Echo the last two comments. I bought a small version of the DD when it first came out. Now I have the 750. The original sharpened very well, but was limited in the size bits it would handle. Get the 750 the first time and it will save you more than it costs. Heck for DIY jobs, you can use twist bits that you can buy at a yard sale....$2/handful. [;)][:D]
 
Nobody ever answered the original topic question as to which brand was "best". My answer is, I don't know. I inherited a box full of bits, none of which have brand names on them. I have purchased, singly and in sets many bits. Except for the Harbor Freight, I can't tell what or who produced them. Some of the higher priced weirdo sizes that are 'musts' for some of the pen kits are clearly marked 'China' and won't drill for [xx(] without sharpening cost the most. It's a puzzlement. But, I have on good reccomendation that the company below sells high quality bits. Get out your checkbook.

I've heard nothing but good things about Fisch drill bits and I really like the way the Norseman (sold by BB at Arizona Silhouette) bits cut. I only have one Norseman. The rest of my bits are from a 115 HF bit set. I too use the DD, sharpen all of mine to a split point and they cut just fine.
 
From the 3 or 4 different types of drill bits - I found that Norseman TM Magnum Super Premium Heavy Duty Drill Bits seemed to work best out of the box- and stay sharp much longer than even the 5 star brand from Woodcraft that cost as much.

You can pick up these bits from Arizona Silhouette. I ended picking up their full set, I thought it was well worth the money.

I do have the HF bit set too - but before I go back to them - they need to be Drill Dr. up.

Like Rudy, my favorite is mt DeWalt pilot point drill bit set in 1/16" increments. I have almost all the odd sized bits from CSUSA, AS, and PSI but use them only if it is not in the Dewalt set. If they get dull, they will be re-profiled on the grinder and sharpened with my Drill Doctor.

I also love the Norseman bits from AS.
