I do a different holiday ornament for each passing year for family members. It's a project I totally enjoy! This year I got double lucky in trying to think up something different when one of the turning clubs I am a member of decided to make the December project a segmented or stacked holiday ornament. I've never done segmenting at all, so it was an interesting learning experience as well as a fun project. Made a few extras.....lol

Love them. I always like when people do some segmenting in projects in some manner. Those came out real nice and the segmenting takes them next level. keep them coming.

Thanks Everyone for the nice comments! I enjoyed the segmenting - despite sitting with my hands deeply covered in glue while I tried hard to get everything lined up and aligned....lol! There must be an easier way to do this.......but it will be a good story when gifting!

I do not turn a lot of larger items, so I do not have a lot of large turning stock, so am rethinking stock sizes needed if I incorporate some segmenting in the piece. I do have LOTS of flat stock, giving me a lot of potential for playing. One nice thing about pens - they don't need a big wood storage rack which is a plus in my downsized shop!

Those are awesome Kevin!

What finish did you put on them?
Thanks David! I like a pretty natural wood look to these, so I used the Osmo Poly-X Oil Hard Wax finish on them. It's super easy to apply and gives you a satiny finish that highlights the wood. I did a test with some spray lacquer first and wasn't happy with the look, so did the Osmo.

Well done
Wish we had a local
in our area
Not sure where you are located in PA, but it may not matter. Both of my AAW affiliated club's that I belong to in NJ do hybrid meetings - simultaneous broadcasts on Zoom of the entire meeting. We also keep them available to members for watching at any time through our website. We have members in 6 different states that never physically attend a meeting but are frequently on Zoom watching. Lots of clubs throughout the US have done the same and welcome local and remote members. I do know there are fairly active clubs in and around Harrisburg, Allentown, Lancaster and York PA - not sure about elsewhere. A search on the AAW site woodturner.org brings up 15 clubs in PA.

My primary club has spent a good amount of money putting in video and sound upgrades, due to the number of members we have that are not local to our physical club. It's not quite the 'in person' experience, but it does give you access to all the demonstrations as they occur with the ability to ask questions to the demonstrator. Contacting a nearby club via their website may give you some options. Membership is usually pretty reasonable (my primary club is $40 annual dues). Hope something works for you!!
