I have had a Beall Collet Chuck set for a number of years. Until today, I have never had a need to use the 3/4 in collet. However, today I did and am a bit confused.

The collet labeled 3/4 actually has an ID of 5/8 and will not accept a 3/4 in rod.

Am I misunderstanding what the measurement refers to?

Or do I have a incorrectly labeled collet?

All the other collets have IDs that correspond to their measurements and accept rods of the diameter that they are labeled.

I'm thinking that I have a mistaken labeled 3/4 in collet and want to see if anyone else has ever run into this.

Thanks,

Sounds like you have a collet that is incorrectly labeled.
Do a good turn daily!

The collet chucks are labeled for the smallest size that can be fitted in the chuck.

They are metric and the imperial measurements are only approximations. The range of a collet is about 1/16" or about 1mm

You can get a full range set of metric collet chucks on Ebay from 800watt. His communication level is somewhere between poor and non-existent, but his products are good and inexpensive.

Brian,
Just an outside chance here, but..were you able to measure the i.d. to verify that
it is actually 5/8". Reason I'm asking is many round things like pen blanks that are marked/sold as being 3/4" are actually larger by enough that they won't go in the nominal size collet.
Just a thought..I know it happened to me a long time ago the first time I went to put
a 3/4" dia. pen blank in my collet chuck.Major confusion until calipers were used.
(The solution, if this is your situation, is a metric collet or a 25/32" collet).

If you are using run of the mill round bar it most likely has a coating (plating) on it, unless it is T&G which will be a precision bar. I was using some plated 3/8" the other day and had the same problem.

Lin.

Good points all and confirm that I'm not completely turned around. Sent an email in to Mr. Beall yesterday and simply did not have time to follow it up with a phone call today. Hopefully I will have time to call tomorrow.

I used my calipers and the ID definitely reads 5/8 as does the collet labeled 5/8. :-)

I think I have a mislabeled collet.

Thanks again!
