A while ago I was told that you could use high density foam to apply CA to a blank.

Well, be careful what kind of foam you use folks. I had some foam from a hard drive package I got, and when it hit the CA glue it started melting and smoking like a cigar!:eek:

I then tried some foam from a 'mattress topper', and that was even worse!!!!

So, make sure you get the right type of high density foam. And, I wish I could tell you what that is, but obviously I don't know. :biggrin:

Chip, NOT high density foam, closed cell foam. Big difference. Think "thin foam", not "thick foam". The thick stuff will start a fire! DAMHIKT:)
 
Ahhhh, ok, now it makes sense!! I thought it was just me. LOL, it was smoking and sputtering and doing all kinds of crazy stuff. LOL. DAMHIKT
 
If you know someone that installs hardwood flooring the stuff they put down first is what I use. Its a thin foam that is covered in plastic I had about a half a roll left from doing a room in our house. Works great I probably have enough to last a year I now use about 1/3 the CA I use to.( Sorry Monty)

You can use the high density foam.
Just fold it like you normally would, or cut it to the size yo unormally would,
Then place it in the little bags that your pen parts came in.
If there is printing on the bag, then use the side with no printing, or turn the bag inside out.
 
I have been using a thin foam that I can buy in sheets from Hobby Lobby in the crafts area. It is very cheap and works well. Using lot less CA since the foam does not absorb the CA like paper towels do. Also, I started using the extra thick CA from Monty and find that I only need to put 2-3 coats to get an excellent finish.

I've been using the foam sheets that come wrapped around new computers, tv's and such electronics for years... never had any trouble with the smoking... I have had CA smoke and such when using paper towels... gets hot too!.... I just cut the foam into little 1 x 2 inch strips... I had not thought about the cell formation, but likely what I have is closed cell as the glue doesn't penetrate the foam at all.

I have bought two new computers, a new tv, dvd player, microwave and a few other electronics over the last few years and have been saving the foam wrapping... I have enough to last my lifetime of pen making...

Ain't it fun when your concentrating on creating a nice smooth and shiny pen and all of sudden your fingers are smoking and burning...:eek::biggrin::biggrin:
