Went to the WoodWorking show on Saturday. Not as good as past years. I went mainly to see the Barry Goss pen turning demo. He put on a full hour class and answered question after. The nice was The Pen he was turning blew out on the end and he showed us how he fixed it. He was using a longwood Burl blank from Belize. Bought some supplies and a couple of Longwood blanks, went home and blew one of mine up twice fixed it both times and you really can't tell where it was repaired. When I fist started this hobby I bought one of his books and a DVD on pen turning. Seeing the Demo brought me back the the basics of turning and finishing. Got the old Skew out, the one I asked him about years ago and used like he showed, worked great, needs some sharpening though. Think i will use the Pen Pro on everything but wood and go back to skews for wood. Barry was very friendly and answered all out question with more one on one type demo's. He made a lot of friends for pen turning. Wished I could have stayed for his demo on casting but my back was really hurting, maybe next weekend over in the bay area if they are having one. He covered every thing form drilling and squaring to finish with CA, made it look simple. Great time. wish I had more $$ to spend but home remodel is limiting me right now.

Tom, I Saw him at the Tampa Woodworking show in March. I learned so much, I have not done much casting, but his demo was very good. I have perfected my CA finish since his demo. He made it so simple. He is a great teacher and I would highly recomend his demos.

Barry Gross

I saw him in Columbus, OH this past spring and was also impressed. As a new turner/penturner, he was very patient with some obviously naive questions. He was not pushy with his products, and I learned some very basic skills that I have since learned are commonplace, but he did not reflect on my inexperience. Kind of like reading the articles in the IAP Library... "So that's what they mean!"

I am very appreciative of the wealth of knowledge that all the members have documented - and the folks that founded this organization... Well done.

He had a display of his pen which were beautiful all types and sizes. He was very easy to talk to and explained why certain thing happened like cloudyness in some CA finishes and how to avoid it. I do need to get some diamond hones to sharpen my tools between going to sharpener. I do like the Sorby micro pen turning tools but the set was a little pricy and will have to wait until I pay off some of remodel bills. I really got away from the wooding pen blank so I think i will do more of them and use some of the wood blank I have.

I visited with Barry when he was at the Woodworking Show in Dallas a few weekends back. As always, the visit was great and he left Dallas with some of my money. I can suggest going to the Woodworking Show and visit with Barry if the show is in your area and Barry is one of the vendors.
Do a good turn daily!
Don

I started using the Sorby Micro tools earlier this spring and they have become my favorite for turning pens. I started with carbide tools, but wanted to learn to use the more traditional tools and I found the Sorbys are good for me.

He is a hero of mine,I have his books.

When I was just checking out this hobby,I was visiting our local Rockler on a Sunday afternoon, and they had his video playing. They set me up with a barstool, and I watched the whole thing.

From that moment on,I was hooked!

Sure wish he could do a demo down here in San Diego someday.
