About 5 years ago, someone at AAW when it was in Phoenix had a bunch of small banskia pods that he had picked up the the San Diego Botanical Garden Australian exhibit. The have a banksia tree and he was allowed to pick the pods up off the ground because the park people just threw them away. They were the small pods...about 4 inches long and up to about 1.5 inches in diameter. He gave me a bunch for the blind turners and we still have a few of them. Just the right size for pens. The brass filled pen is lying on a banksia pod. The other one is filled with turquoise. Both were blind turned.

I don't know how far you are from San Diego, but it might be worth while checking it out.
