Got a bamboo blank from Woodcraft a long time ago. Decided today to turn it for a Fiona kit. Started with the skew and was not impressed. The bamboo is laminated with layers at a right angle. The end grain chipped and splintered. OK, let's keep going and see what happens. After all the end grain was turned off, I had two nice pieces with the grain in the line of the tube. Now to finish it. Will try to remember to post the final pen.

All bamboo of that size will be laminated layers. A little bit of trivia, bamboo is not a wood but a grass.
I have made a couple of kitless pens with it. No problems but I'm using a metal lathe.

Nice and what did you use for finish? Bamboo is interesting- it is possible to hear it growing at night when things are still; bamboo grows the same diameter as the "stump" when cut. A former college professor was touting bamboo as a filter to eliminate heavy metals from water.
Had a DVD of bamboo rod builders; title was Trout Grass.
