...or hobby-but-sell-all-my-pens

I wanted to show this set up... since it actually works now.

I have a Jet 1642 and the banjo will not get very close to a pen blank when slid all the way towards the blank.

So... I got a Robust tool rest, which leans in towards the blank, and this helped

But...

Since I turn between centers, the Robust tool rest is too wide to fit in between the dead center and live center.

So... I had Johnny made me an extended dead center to use in my collet chuck.

It wobbled

It was the chuck... a cheap P.O.S. I reckin :)

So... I got the small set of jaws for my SuperNova.

.... and....

Ta Da!

I still had to do the ol "tappy, tappy, check.... tappy tappy... " when inserting the extended dead center into the chuck, but once I found the sweet spot it spins beautifully..

Just in case I am not the only one who has had this problem, I wanted to share in case it might help someone else.

I think it at least shows I am a determined rascal.... hehehe

Thanks all for the information on the previous thread... honestly, I don't think I would have ever thought that the out-of-round problem I was having with the antler was caused in part by being too far from the blank with the smaller 3/4" oval skew...

BTW... I put the antler piece I was having all the problems with back on the lathe this morning after re-doing my set up and I was able to turn it round immediately.

A bonus too... I am now farther away from the headstock and this really helps when going from left to right with the skew... used to bump into the headstock before.

He shoots, he scores!!

Hi MarC, just get a 3 1/2" tool rest from John. and you can get up close and personal. They are a great purchase. Carl

Heya Carl

I have one... it does not solve this particular problem.

I am turning pens on a large lathe... that is actually the problem that needed solving.

I wish it would have been as simple as buying a tool rest that was less wide... but it was more than that.

I have a 3 1/2 tool rest, but problem with Jet's 1442 and 1642 lathes is the banjo doesn't move far enough in on the ways to get as close to the pen blank as I like to be... I like to work with only about 1/4 inch or less clearance between the tool rest and the blank... I need to look at the robust or else have a post made that tilts in more... both of post for my lathes are vertical.

The Robust will solve the problem IF you are using a mandrel. But if you are turning between centers then the smallest Robust (4") will be too wide.... hence all the gyrations I went through to get my tool rest close to the blank. Most of the time it doesn't seem to matter, but when I was doing antler it mattered a lot.

Marc, I have the same problem with my new Shop Fox 16x42, I have been trying to get the pieces I made to a welding shop and get them welded, together, glad I still have my itty bitty 1014 ..

The jaws and the dead center Johnny made me turned out to be a better solution than I thought... I like that the blank is now farther from the headstock, and my dust hood fits better to boot!
