We had another little one in the church family so I made her baby rattle out of Maple and Purple Heart.
The other picture is the template I use for this particular model.

I have been debating making a couple of these for friends who've had new arrivals lately. Thanks very much for posting this with your template!

Do you just drill the maple and stay outside the diameter on your template to make sure you don't cut too far in?

Yes, that is exactly how I do it. The first couple I made I got to close and 'blew' them. I've learned to use calipers and I make them so the would have a little more than an 1/8th of an inch wider than the hole.

The calipers are brilliant advice, thanks. Would you mind sharing the overall length and hole diameter?

The piece starts out at 2 1/2" x 7". The holes are 1 1/4"

Finish. I sand to 1200 grit and then use a mixture of pure beeswax and pure carnauba wax that I make myself. Use a buffing wheel to get it to shine. I use pure wax and no finish because you just know that baby is going to put the rattle around its mouth.
