I won first place with this entry at a competition sponsored by our turning club. The top is sapele and the pedestal is walnut (dyed).

Okay, how the heck did you do that? When I saw the thumbnail I assumed it was warped acrylic or something, NOT wood. That would be right at home in a gallery.
 
Every time I see something like that I simply sit in awe...... like has been asked, how in the heck do you turn something like that with the various axis's?

It is actually just a single axis. Think of it as two square bowls turned back to back from the same piece of wood. Then carve away three corners from one 'bowl' and one corner from the other.

Pretty fun with those wings flying by at high speed, isn't it! I love square turning!

I've viewed this a few times and still can't get my head around it :embarrassed:
Awesome work - I'll have to ask professor google to explain how you did this :)
