They are really nasty when they come out the other end, I haven't used them since the Forstner type bits became popular. You still need to have a scrap block under the hole exit and go slow with the Forstner bits The second problem is they aren't available in all the sizes letter, number, fractional and mm drills are.
They mostly have them in the larger sizes, above 3/8"dia. Plus there is a reason they are called ships augers, for beams etc. in wood boat building in the old day with the hand brace, then they were converted to use with a drill motor.

In my experience of using them in the construction industry they would create more problems than they would solve.Those types of bits are designed for aggressive drilling in wood and lack the precision we require for pens.They will more than likely blow the blanks out when drilling with them.
