check the jaw function for smoothness and to make sure all three jaws clamp evenly at the same time. I have had chuck that gripped in the back and not out at the front. look for easy or even sloppy movement of the carriage at the front by the chuck and tight dragging back at the tailstock. This checks for excessive wear on the ways.
Its easy to adjust the carriage if its a little to loose the whole way.
 
I'm not in the market for one. I have my little 7x14 that I still don't know much about using. Just thought someone else reasonably close might be interested. Good advise, though.
