Just when you thought that Friday gridlock traffic couldn't get worse, Obama decides to come over to John's Creek for a $35,000 a plate meet and greet at Tyler Perry's.

Anyone familiar with Air Force One's Atlanta's landing requirements and the available routes over to John's Creek, know what a nightmare this will be. ADD to the fact that the forecast is calling for strong winds and possible large hail during rush hours, could make getting home a "Saturday" thing.

I recommend filling the gas tank at lunch break and making sure the radio is tuned to Capt. Herb. What are these bafoons thinking?

he did the same thing to us in Houston last Friday afternoon. Screwed up traffic from Ellington Field to Downtown (for a fundraiser at the stadium), then from Downtown to River Oaks for a private dinner.

on top of that - we had a torrential rain all afternoon.

On any given day, Atlanta's airport is the busiest in the world. When they try to land Air Force One at Hartsfield, it turns the area into the worlds largest parade of circling airplanes with empty gas tanks. It also turns South Atlanta into the world's biggest parking lot.

So, they land Air Force One at a "secret location" that everyone in the South knows about and TURNS THE ENTIRE CITY AND ALL THE BEDROOM COMMUNITIES into a gas guzzling parking lot.

Seems to me they could be content just screwing up D.C. traffic.

Keep in mind this is really not Obama's fault. It happened exactly the same way with Bush. It wasn't quite as bad with previous presidents, but 9/11 changed that. Blame it on the Secret Service if you want to assign blame. The president needs to get out and see the people, and if there are yahoos that have been expressing outright hatred of the president, then the Secret Service has to do what it has to do to protect him.

Benton :
I wasn't blaming this on Obama. In fact, it wasn't meant as political in any way.

Anyone who lives in Georgia will acknowledge that the "planners" for Ga DOT should have had their map privileges suspended years ago. AND IT GETS WORSE WITH EACH ATTEMPT AT IMPROVEMENT. Don't get me started on the how the new HOV lanes are referred to as the new HAVOC lanes.

If you've ever been on the Beltway in D.C., you'd know that the only place in the world that knows LESS about traffic management than Atlanta is D.C.

It's sorta like the age old joke of the two bald men who "put their heads together", only to make an a$$ of themselves.

AJC says the Perry shindig is over by Greenbrier. That should lessen the impact on the north side of town, but will be rough for me leaving the airport this afternoon. :frown:

WSB says it's a two part deal, BOTH during rush hours.
First part near Greenbriar ($2,500 gets you into this one). THEN motorcade over to John's Creek.
And this $35,000 dinner is at the old Dean Mansion that Perry just bought here. I think $35,000 also buys a couple of cocktails, :)

So, traffic will be FUBAR North, East AND West from 3 - 10 pm.

Steve, if that old K-Mart over on Old Dixie Hwy is still open, you may want to pop over there at lunch and buy a sleeping bag! You ain't going anywhere this afternoon:(

I hardly call attending fundraisers - "seeing the people"

On the bright side he probably will not come to Birmingham. There is no way he could screw it up any worse than it already is.

ROTFLMAO!!!!!
You DO realize that with the traffic snarl around the area this afternoon, with ONLY South Bound 85 and 20 West below the airport the only two open roads THAT IT WOULD BE QUICKER TO GET TO ALABAMA, than across town:

What's for dinner in Birmingham:)

Aye, a buck and a half would get ye to B'ham. Might even defrost some 4 alarm chili with a extra toss in of Jalapeno.

I was watching a special the other day on History or Discovery, it was late I have insomnia, and it was about the secret service. It said They have had to drastically increase security for the president as he gets like 100% more death threats a day than any other president ever has. The president has no control over security.

I've been shot at, threatened by drug dealers and cops (there is a book of stories from that summer) but my experience with the Secret Service agents who work on the president's security detail was the first time I had SERIOUS concerns. These guys redefine intense.

Sounds good, JM! I'd have to take a pass on the Jalapeño extra toss. This traffic has already got my butt in an knot! I'm not sure I could handle the added stress of hot peppers:)

You just see the gridlock of traffic, you have no idea the logistical nightmare and manpower it takes to make a 30 minute session happen.

I was having dinner with my son in a Downtown Dallas hamburger joint a couple of Tuesday's ago and these four intense guys in black come in and demand to talk to the owner. It is 6:30 in the evening and it seems that Ex President Bush wants to come in and have a hamburger so the place has to close. The owner says " It is my early rush hour" one of the guys says "So?" Upshot is everyone in line is asked to leave and the rest of us are asked to hurry up and finish so the building can be cleared.

I always groan when a big-name politician comes to town. Wouldn't it just be simpler, and probably less expensive to load all the people who go to these fundraisers on a plane and ship them to DC?

Clinton ate at a Mexican place in Tucson, they did not kick everyone out. They would not let them leave.

I think you are right Mickey. A lot less hassle. The bonus to living here is not a big enough voter base to draw the attention of politicians. Lots of famous people, but we are used to that and ignore them.

Captain Herb? Hmmm

LMAO!!!!!
For the record, Capt. Herb is Capt Herb Emory, an Atlanta NASCAR legend and the best traffic helicopter pilot in the City.

Capt. Herb and Chopper Dave know where traffic is messed up, where most people are headed and how to guide locals to the "surface streets" that are moving, leaving the touristas to fight among themselves on the overpopulated freeways.

The CAPT. HERB to which you refer is not so useful in traffic, but makes chicken wings taste wonderful:)
