I will have to put off making pens for a little longer.
I found out I need to invest some money into the family vehicle for wheel bearing hubs.
I couldn't exactly afford the parts, so there's no way to pay a mechanic to do the needed repairs. I've decided to make an attempt at replacing the parts myself. I have a difficult time getting up and down, so this might take me several days to accomplish, but I'm determined to do it.
I won't be able to do it for a week or so and I have to wait for the parts to arrive. No-one stocks much of anything anymore.
Please keep your fingers crossed.

I guess I don't know what a wheel bearing hub is. Worked on cars all my life. Heard of wheel hubs, and bearings, but not wheel bearing hubs. Maybe new terminology. If money is tight, make your first visit to the salvage yard instead of the parts store.

Some times though you just need to bite the bullet. If that job cost you an injury ask yourself was it worth it??? Proper tools and knowledge make the job go faster and safer. I wish you luck and hope we don't read an injury report next.

The hub and bearing is one complete unit. It has three bolts that hold it to the spindle and most newer vehicles have them. It also has a speed sensor ring and ABS sensor attached to it. They are non-serviceable and considered a consumable part. Going to a salvage yard would just be asking for trouble and potentially having to redo the job. A turd can be polished, but all you end up with is a shiny turd. This is a family vehicle and I won't chance it breaking down while the family is away from home.

I do have the tools and knowledge to do the job. It's just the old body don't like to do it. I don't believe I'll get injured, it's just going to take me longer than a younger more able bodied individual.

This is much more important than making any pens. I'll get to the pens when this is finished. Provided something else doesn't come up.

Piece of cake for someone with tools and knowledge. Where in Indiana are you located? I'm in Louisville, but if close enough, I could swing by and give you some assistance

Thanks for the offer! I'm definitely too far for you to swing by.
I don't expect too much trouble with the actual job, it's the mobility and the torque spec on the axle nut(yeah 4 wheel drive), it's 184 ft lbs. Dang, that is tight!

Thanks to everyone for the confidence and well wishes.
I will let you know how it turns out.

Good luck on the bearing job, I feel your pain..(literally) After working on cars for 30 years, I've developed arthritis in my hands, feet and back, slowing 'quickie' jobs from less than an hour to....

Let's just say a lot...

One trick that helps with the nut torque, block the hub with a steel bar (put some lug nuts on the studs and use those for the bar) then all you have to do is push down on the torque wrench to get the proper torque. You can use your weight to help that way easing up on some of the "pain inducing" maneuvers..
